Open Studio - Metalsmithing

This season, we are pleased to offer Open Studio times with Emma Frazier. This is a time to bring in your projects and enjoy use of our tools in a relaxed environment. While Emma will be not teaching technique at these times, she will be there to brainstorm with you and offer her wise opinions!

Join us in our studio and get expert advice from one of our talented staff in how to finish off or get started on simple projects that can make wonderful holiday gifts. Light instruction will be offered to support your ideas coming into form!

Beaded Mesh Crystal Cage

Capture raw crystal chunks in custom-made beaded cages. Graphic, clean, and elegant, this project is perfect for irregular shaped stones or beads. Learn how to make free-form beaded netting, and fit each individual stone to its cage. All skill levels are welcome.

Beaded Mesh Crystal Cage Workshop

Beaded Orbs

Learn to weave a sphere from fabulous faceted beads! Complete a pair of earrings in this class and add a pop of color to your outfit. Sparkly crystals or earthy fire-polished rounds provide a variety of styles within one technique. Beginners welcome.

Beaded Orbs Workshop

Cage Wrapping

Have you ever come across a beautiful crystal or rock that you would love to wear as a pendant, but were stumped as to how to convert it into one, as it did not have a hole for stringing? Come learn how to transform those precious crystals, rocks and stones into beautiful pendants by mastering the art of wire wrap bezels. Each and every one is naturally unique!

Cage Wrapping Workshop

Classic Prong Setting

In this class you will learn one of the classic and timeless settings that never goes out of style…the four prong setting. You will learn how to fit a round faceted stone to the correctly sized prong setting. We will go over how to measure and cut the seats by hand. At the end of the class you will have a finished pendant, and with the addition of chain, you are ready to wear your new treasure home! Prior experience using a jewelry saw and files is required.

Classic Prong Setting  Workshop

Crocheted Components

If you love beads AND textiles, then this class is for you! We’ll cover the basics of bead crochet - chain stitch, single and double crochet, when and how to add beads, and incorporate stylish metal components into the finished designs. Suitable for beginners.

Festive Chandelier Earrings Workshop

Findings

This class is a dream come true for those of you who have been aspiring to make your own quality findings. Form, flatten and harden various gauges of wire to create your own custom finishing touches to your work. You'll learn how to shape and move metal with no heat necessary. A variety of ear-wires, a hook and eye clasp, and a toggle clasp are all taught in this class.

Findings Workshop

Free-form Stone Setting

In this class students will learn to wrap the edge of stones with copper foil,cover the foil with solder using a soldering iron and then attach jump ringsto create pendants for necklaces or earrings. This method of stone settingallows the piece to be viewed from both sides by creating an open bezelsetting. This is a great class for beginners and those wanting to addsomething new to their skill set.

Free-form Stone Setting Workshop

Gold-Filled Bangle with Custom Charm

Get ready to solder some gold but without the high cost of pure gold! Join us in this gold-filled solder class where you will learn how to make a gold-filled bangle bracelet that will fit your wrist perfectly. Each student will then cut, out of gold or silver, a custom made charm that will hang from the bangle. At the end of the class you will have an elegant gold bangle that is truly a lovely form of personal expression. No prior metalsmithing experience is required.

Hammered Components

Learn how to make unique metal components for your jewelry designs. In this class, we will explore how to design, shape and put to use one of a kind metal parts. The creation of these components really gives your work a unique styling. You can use any metal you prefer for these techniques. All skill levels welcome. This class does not include instruction on soldering or fusing. The focus of this class is on hammering and shaping.

Instagram For Artists

Join jewelry maker and social media maven Amber Traeden for a two hour run-down on the basics of all things Instagram. She will walk you through getting started and on your way to creating a home for yourself and your creative work in the social media universe. If you have been timid about getting your work out there, Amber will offer an enjoyable and friendly entry into this territory.

Instagram For Artists Workshop

Intro to Beading

Come learn all the foundational techniques in making a quality beaded necklace or bracelet. We will go over all the basics from crimping a crimp bead onto softflex, attaching leather to crimp ends and clasps, and tying a proper slip knot. Last but not least, we will go over how to do a basic wire wrap that can be used for earrings, and chains. There will also be time at the end of the class for you to work with your own beads and materials to start a project and ask questions. This workshop is offered twice.

Intro To Etsy for Jewelry Sellers

Come and learn how to turn your jewelry creativity into a small business with local jewelry maker and seller, Lynzee Lynx. Learn the basics of how to get started on the amazing Etsy site. Get some tips and learn some tricks to start and maintain your very own online shop. Come equipped with your questions, and we will take a look at what you have and what you need to get going.

Intro To Etsy for Jewelry Sellers Workshop

Intro to Metalsmithing

Are you ready to expand your jewelry making skills? Then come join us for this introductory metalsmithing class where we go over how to safely work in a metalsmithing studio and what the various tools are used for. You will have the opportunity to see what it is like to drill a hole with a flex shaft, use a rolling mill to flatten a piece of metal, use a torch to solder a jump ring…and so much more. This is a great class for all levels of experience with metalsmithing.

Expanding the focus beyond earrings...learn how to make your own headpins and eye pins, basic loops, wrapped loops, briolette wraps, and sectional pieces. You will learn how to make complex designs from individual components. This class is suitable for beginners and those wishing to improve their wire wrapping skills. Each class meets once.

Knotting…pearls and more!

Join us in learning the time-honored beading technique of knotting. The class will alsol include learning how to apply bead tips and knotting directly onto a clasp. Anita will share many tricks of the trade as they relate to choosing stringing material, accommodating challenging bead hole sizes and choosing appropriate clasps. Knotting applies to more than just pearls...mala making and knotting between stones often require a knowledge of skillful and artful knotting.

Organic Prong Setting

It’s time to get ready to expand your stone setting skills by learning how to set that uniquely shaped stone or found object in a prong setting. In this class, you will learn how to create your own handmade prong setting for that one of a kind object. Previous experience with metalsmithing is required. You will be working with a torch, jewelers saw and files. It is required that you have previously worked with these tools.

Peyote Crescent Earrings

These swingy, sparkly earrings seem complicated to construct, but stitch up quickly. Using only flat peyote stitch students will learn to increase, decrease and connect to form a hollow crescent. With an infinite variety of texture and color combinations these earrings make perfect gifts! All levels welcome.

Peyote Crescent Earrings Workshop

Soldered Linked Bracelet

Learn to make your own chain link bracelet and clasp. The application for this technique is quite versatile. In this class, students will learn how to cut their own jump rings and then solder them together. The piece is finished off with a handcrafted clasp. This is a great class for beginners or anyone that would like to brush up on their soldering skills.

Soldered Linked Bracelet  Workshop

Textured Silver Rings

Come experience the creative effects of melting silver…on purpose! This technique brings out the amazing texturing possibilities of silver without all of the intense clean-up to follow. We will also solder together some simple bands that you can apply a hammered or sand paper finish. By the end of class you will have a set of stackable rings to wear. How fun is that? No prior metalsmithing experience is required.
